Family Stories

We are the parents of a young man with Autism. Our son is now in his early 20s, completely verbal and active in his community. When we were looking for the right place for him, our partners in care directed us to Community Resources and Support Services (CRSS).

We met with the manager of the house and the staff during our tour. The house was fresh, full of light and open to the residents to access the areas of the home. Each resident has his or her own bedroom and we decorated our son’s room to his personal taste. The staff took the time to get to know our son prior to moving in. Afterwards, the staff took care to engage him with his preferred activities. CRSS also has an Adult Skills Centre, similar to a Day Program where our son attends five days a week. The activities are client centred where our son’s preferences are taken into account. The staff are well trained and responsive to our son’s challenges that he has from time to time. We as parents are kept updated regularly. We are so grateful for the compassion and caring the staff are towards our son and to us too! A couple of years ago, our son was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes requiring very close monitoring and insulin injections. We have been so pleased that the staff at CRSS have embraced the enormous amount of learning about the disease, monitoring of blood sugar and administering medications multiple times a day. As parents, we are comforted knowing he is in good hands.

As parents, we took our first vacation together, just the two of us, for the first time in many years. This is due to our confidence in the staff that he is well looked after.

We would like to say a hearty and appreciative thank you to Community Resources and Support Services (CRSS) for the ongoing support they are providing to our child.  About 7 years ago we needed a place that provide love, empathy and care to our child as he transitioned from one treatment center to a new home.  We wanted the residential home to provide love, care, compassion and structural support for our teenage child.

As parents it broke our hearts to place our only child in someone else care but we knew that we were not qualified in the skills needed nor had the experience with behavior management that the Direct Service Providers and Child and Youth Workers have to safely manage Autism behaviors.

Community Resources and Support Services provides exceptional care within the day program and residential program to our child, who is now an adult. They allow us to share in the day-to-day life of our child and to have our child visit on weekends and holidays so that we can continue build on the parent and child relationship.

Although our child is still in care, we have seen a vast improvement in his daily life skills because of the structured treatment, educational and life skills programs provided.  Although our child needs continued support, I am grateful and happy that CRSS is providing this for us.  Our child has shown vast improvement with behavior and much improvement with communication because of this care.   We would like our child to continue living in an environment that provide care, love, empathy and unconditional support.

I would recommend CRSS to any parents who are struggling and who needs a place where their children can call home and where parents can feel as comfortable as we do.  We have witnessedour child’s growth from a teenager to a young adult.

Thank you to the team at the Residential House and the team at the Community Resources Support Services Day Program (CRSS). We appreciate the nurturing care that was and still is given to our child and we wish for more successful support in the future.

This is Zakiyeh, Reza’s mother. I want to share my story about CRSS!! More than 10 years ago. I was struggling so much.  Reza was violent, and it was so difficult for me to keep him at home as a single mother. It wasn’t safe for him and or for me.

With some help, I decided to put him with the CRSS team. Trust me, it wasn’t easy the first time I left him, I couldn’t sleep overnight. What was going to happen to my love if I’m not with him? How could I trust to leave my child without me at a new place?

But, when I saw the CRSS house and met the team I was so surprised! The house was so clean and warm that it gave off an energy to make you feel at home.  The Program Supervisor and management team are awesome. The staff were so friendly and understanding so I had to ask myself -what do you want more my child at home or my child in a safe place?  Reza has been with CRSS for over 10 years – thank God. I don’t have any issues. He comes home to visit during the weekends. He’s calm and we are happy.

I really appreciate the CRSS Team!

My name is Maria, my son Ryan has been living at CRSS group home for almost 14 years. Placing the trust and care of my son with CRSS was the right decision. CRSS staff have always provided excellent care and support for Ryan. Ryan is treated with dignity and respect, CRSS staff always do an amazing job of doing what is in the best interests for Ryan to live the best life he can. I am so thankful for the excellent care that CRSS provides for Ryan and his peers.
